I am attempting to blog every single day. I may as well tell you why. Over the summer I found a portfolio of writings I did while in Rose Fuller's Creative Writing class in high school. Every day, she would give us a topic and have us write about it, or create a character to experience a scenario. Rereading them, I discovered that some of the writing was some of the best I'd ever done, and often I was surprised by my old self. Right then and there I knew why: I was exercising. I was writing every weekday, and many weekends: experimenting, tweaking, producing. Some days I had nothing to say, but by writing through it, I was still able to fashion something that was readable. I'm not saying that every single day I had some grand epiphany that would change the world of literature. But every single day I was at least making something that I could be proud of.
So I decided that I would start writing every day again. It was after looking at some friends' blogs and some very amazing nerdfighting vloggers (see: "Places to go." bar down there ↓), that I decided that this was the best place to start. Granted, it is not me sitting at a desk writing creative fiction, but it is me sitting at a desk writing, and for now I hope that such aspirations are acceptable, as my creativity would, I think, suffer if it was subjected to scrutiny on a daily basis. I'm all for critique, but none of you are Mrs. Fuller, and also, as far as I know there
Scratch that. Google comes through again. But regardless, I think for now a blog will suffice.
I have also been asked why I do not vlog. A few reasons, actually: 1) I do not have an acceptable web cam. 2) I do not have video editing software that I am comfortable with. And most importantly, 3) I don't know what to vlog about, and I'm worried that I would try to be funny, which is something that I am not.
So that is why. Maybe someday, when I am feeling especially crazy or I have something exceptionally important to talk about or show you, you will find that there is a video of me staring you in the face. Just keep in mind that this is unlikely at the moment.
I am also aware that on some days this blog functions more as a veritable diary than an informative outlet. If you dislike this, I am sorry. I am pretty sure that my family likes to hear about my life, and journaly days are mainly for them, and for my future self. Future Harrison will enjoy reading back about his college experience.
I don't know why I felt like expounding on my purposes today, but it just felt necessary. It's probably more directed to myself than to you. Speaking of college experience, here is a video that I enjoyed; take it with a grain of salt, because obviously I don't condone binge drinking. But the other topics he covers I generally feel comfortable with.
EDIT: Also, for those of you who were wondering, the name of this blog is a paraphrase of a quote that was said while I was nowhere around. I don't even know the person who said it, just that his first name is Daniel. All I know is that he said it to my best friend Macy and it just perfectly described the way I can get sometimes. So I figured that the best thing to call a blog where I talk about my opinions would be some self-referential humor. The official quote is ""Sometimes my opinions just go LA LA LA all over your feelings." Some words were left out because Blogger wouldn't let me type anything longer. To say this quote, you must walk two fingers over the imaginary person's imaginary feelings while saying the "LA LA LA" part.
And now I'm going to close with a quote from Ben Fold's and Pomplamoose's new collaboration song, Things you Think, with dialogue by Nick Hornby.
"Did you know that Dickens invented thirteen thousand characters? Thirteen thousand! That's a character a day for the whole of his working life. What have I done today? Dropped the kids off at school, listened to the new National album, played a stupid game on my computer. That's why I'm not Dickens. Kids. Dicken's wife would have done the school run. I'm all for feminism, but it's cost my my one shot at immortality."
I hope that made you laugh out loud, or at least chuckle a little to yourself, because it did me. Although I did get to hear the man say it, and in an English accent, so of course it loses a bit in transition. Well, have a great weekend, everyone. Talk to you all tomorrow.
Well, you didn't forget to be awesome. :)
ReplyDeleteKeep up the exercising. It's one of the reasons I do Yelp reviews and Twitter posts, as any writing is still exercising those same brain centers. I also find the discipline imposed by Twitter's limits great practice for capturing an essence in concentrated form.
